If you're a small to medium-sized business owner, you already have enough on your plate without spending your valuable time worrying about whether your books are accurate. You need to know that your transactions are being recorded correctly, your accounts are reconciled, and your financials reflect what is actually happening in your business. When those things are taken care of, you can spend more of your time doing what you do best—running your business.

That's exactly where Summer Shade Bookkeeping comes in.

Janet Spaulding, Founder of Summer Shade Bookkeeping with her four dogs and a beautiful outdoor patio.

I'm Janet Spaulding, owner of Summer Shade Bookkeeping, and I provide virtual bookkeeping services for small to medium-sized businesses that need accurate, dependable financial information without having to manage the bookkeeping themselves.

I believe you should be able to trust your books. You should be able to look at your month-end financials and know that the numbers have been properly recorded and reconciled. And when you have questions about what you're seeing, you should have someone you can talk to.

Know Your Numbers. Know Your Business. Grow With Confidence.

Virtual Bookkeeping Services Start With the Basics

Your bookkeeping doesn't have to be complicated to be important.

At its core, your bookkeeping needs to tell the truth about what is happening financially in your business. That starts with transactions being posted and categorized correctly and your accounts being reconciled so that your financial records are accurate.

At Summer Shade Bookkeeping, I will post and categorize your transactions and reconcile your bank accounts, credit card accounts, loan accounts, and lines of credit. At the end of each month, I will produce your financials, so you have an up-to-date financial picture of your business.

I exclusively use QuickBooks Online for bookkeeping, keeping your financial records organized, reconciled, and up to date.

That is the work I am here to do for you.

I'm not interested in making bookkeeping sound more complicated than it needs to be. I want you to know exactly what I'm handling and, more importantly, know that I'm taking the accuracy of your books seriously.

Because before you can understand your numbers, you need to be able to trust them.

Experience and Credentials Matter When You Trust Someone With Your Books

When you hand over your bookkeeping, you're giving someone access to sensitive financial information about your business. I believe that makes the person you choose important.

I bring more than 30 years of experience in financial and business operations, including more than 12 years of owning and successfully operating a business. In addition, I am a QuickBooks Online ProAdvisor, AIPB Member, AIPB Certified Bookkeeper (CB), and AIPB QBO Certified User.

Those credentials are important to me because they represent the knowledge and training I bring to my work. But what matters most to you is what that experience means when I'm handling your books: I understand how important accurate financial information is to a business owner.

I've been on the business-owner side of the table. I understand that the numbers behind your business aren't abstract figures sitting inside QuickBooks. They represent revenue you've worked to earn, expenses you've incurred, decisions you're making, and the business you're working hard to build.

That's why I treat your bookkeeping with the care it deserves.

Your Month-End Financials Should Tell You Something

There is a difference between receiving financial statements and actually understanding what they are telling you.

Your month-end financials give you information about your business, but you may not always have the time—or the desire—to sit down and dig through them yourself. You may look at the numbers and wonder what changed, whether something stands out, or what you should be paying attention to.

That's where I want to be a resource for you.

For clients who want additional help understanding their month-end financials, I offer an optional service that includes a short, personalized two- to five-minute video with your financials. I'll walk you through what I'm seeing and point out anything I think is worth your attention.

Maybe an expense changed from the previous month. Maybe a category looks different than you expected. Maybe there is simply something I want to make sure you notice.

You can watch the video when it's convenient for you rather than adding another appointment to your calendar. It's a simple way to help you understand your numbers while still allowing you to spend your time where it's needed most.

And if you prefer to review your financials on your own, that's perfectly fine. The additional video is simply an option for clients who want a little more explanation and personal attention.

You Know Your Business. I Know Bookkeeping.

I don't believe you need someone telling you how to run your business.

You know your business. You know your customers, your industry, your services, your goals, and the decisions you're facing. What you shouldn't have to do is become a bookkeeper just because you're the owner.

That's where I come in.

My job is to handle the bookkeeping accurately and provide you with financial information you can depend on. Your job is to use that information, along with your own knowledge and experience, to run your business.

If you have a question about your financials, ask me. If something doesn't make sense, let's talk about it. You shouldn't feel like you need an accounting degree or a bookkeeping background just to have a conversation about your own numbers.

I want you to feel comfortable asking questions because your financial information belongs to you, and you deserve to understand it.

Why Summer Shade? 🌿

The name Summer Shade has a personal meaning for me.

Summer Shade, Kentucky, is where my grandparents' farmhouse is located. That farmhouse is part of my family history, and when I chose the name Summer Shade Bookkeeping, I wanted the name to have a connection to something real and meaningful to me.

There's also something about the idea of summer shade that fits the way I think about the relationship I want to have with my clients.

Think about sitting underneath a tree on a warm summer day. You can step out of the heat, slow down for a little while, and take a breath.

Running a business isn't always like that. There are customers to take care of, decisions to make, problems to solve, and responsibilities that seem to multiply as your business grows. Bookkeeping can become one more thing sitting in the back of your mind, even when you know it needs to be handled.

I want Summer Shade Bookkeeping to be a place where you know your business finances are handled with accuracy and professionalism.

Not because your numbers aren't important.

Because they are.

Knowing Your Numbers Changes the Conversation

When your books are accurate and your accounts are reconciled, your financials can become much more useful to you.

Instead of wondering what is happening financially, you have information to look at. You can see your revenue and expenses, recognize changes from one month to another, and begin asking better questions about your business.

Your numbers don't make every business decision for you, and they certainly don't tell you everything you need to know. You bring your experience, knowledge, goals, and understanding of your business to those decisions.

But your financials give you an important piece of the picture.

You need that picture to be accurate.

That's why I believe accurate bookkeeping is so much more than a task that needs to be completed each month. It is the foundation for having financial information you can actually use.

You Don't Have to Do It All Yourself

Maybe you've been handling your own bookkeeping since you opened your business. Perhaps it worked well when you were smaller, but your business has changed and your time has become harder to come by.

Maybe you're tired of spending evenings catching up on transactions. Maybe you've reached the point where you'd rather have someone else take responsibility for the books. Or maybe you've simply realized that bookkeeping isn't where you want to spend your time anymore.

There's nothing wrong with that.

Owning a business means making decisions about where your time, energy, and attention are most valuable. Sometimes that means recognizing when a responsibility should be handed to someone who specializes in it.

You don't have to choose between knowing your numbers and doing your own bookkeeping.

You can have accurate books, reliable month-end financials, and someone you trust handling the bookkeeping while you focus on your business.

If you would like to discuss how I can save you hours and the stress of doing your own bookkeeping, let's talk. ☕
